Man Leaving Gardena Casino With Winnings Is Shot 4 Times in Robbery; Assailants at Large

A man who was leaving Larry Flynt’s Lucky Lady Casino in Gardena with his winnings was shot four times during a robbery at a gas station early Wednesday morning, police said.

Los Angeles police were the first to respond to the shooting call about 4:30 a.m. at Rosecrans and Vermont avenues in the Harbor Gateway area, according to the Gardena Police Department, which eventually took over the investigation.

After the victim had won a “large sum of money” and was leaving the casino, another vehicle struck his intentionally, police said.

The victim pulled into a Chevron station a few hundred feet from the casino to exchange information with the occupants of the other car.

There, two men tried to rob him, prompting a struggle. The victim was shot about four times and the two attackers fled, police said.

Surveillance video showed the victim trying to get into the gas station’s convenience store, but the doors were locked.

He was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in stable condition.

The men, who were driving a light-colored gray or silver four-door SUV, fled eastbound from the gas station.

They were described as black men between 25 and 30 years old, both between 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet tall. One who held a dark automatic handgun had a dark complexion and dreadlocks and was wearing a white T-shirt and dark jeans, police said. The other wore a gray hooded sweatshirt and light pants.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Mike Sargent at 310-217-9635 or Detective Carlos Fernandez at 310-217-9615.
